They Specialize By Product Or Area The Best real estate Advice I Have Ever Received
The first real estate company I worked for specialized in the commercial side. My very first month, my broker suggested to another rookie agent and me that we go talk to a very successful shopping center developer. This developer worked with agents on a daily basis, so my broker reasoned he might be able to give us some guidance as to what we should be doing to be successful. When we met with the developer, we asked him ..."What does it take to be a successful agent?" He replied quickly and without hesitation "Pick an area, know it better than anyone, and people will always come to you". He told us the biggest mistake he sees agents making is chasing rabbits all over the Metroplex. They know a little about a lot of areas, but they really don't know a lot about any one area. Those are the agents who might be doing well now, but when the market cools down, they would be the first to wash out. He was right on all accounts. I would bet my next commission Stanley Peskind, that developer, doesn't even remember that 20 minute conversation 22 some years ago, much less know my name. But what he said stuck with me and has been one of the major guiding principles for both my commercial and residential real estate career. People want to know they are working with an expert in their field, whether it be car repair, building pools, working on computers, or buying and selling real estate. If you are a new agent and have decided to make real estate your career, pick an area you want to specialize in early on. Commit your time and energy to it. Stay focused on that area and don't spin you wheels chasing rabbits all over town. Do the research necessary to stay on top of that market. It will take time to establish yourself, but once you have, buyers and sellers alike will seek you out for your knowledge, information, and professionalism.
