My favorite drive up to McKinney is on County Road 317. It's a winding, hilly, two lane, black top road through some beautiful land. Almost all of the land is undeveloped towards the airport so you really get the feeling you are out in the country. Much of the land is also within the Fairview Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) and not officially within the town limits at this time. Earlier this year, I noticed a small gravel road leading back into the woods. I thought to myself "That's going to make a beautiful home site back there". Then about a month ago, a sign went up and I realized it was a soccer complex. But this is not just any soccer complex! The Fairview Texas Soccer complex consists of 74 acres of land owned by the town of Fairview and leased out for the facility. I met Curtis Kimble, the groundskeeper for the facility while out there taking pictures and he was nice enough to show me around and tell me about the facility. A shot of the drive through the woods to the complex. The road winds around the corner to the right.
I hope they decide to leave the small frame home that came with the property. There is no clubhouse as yet, but one is planned. It will have shower facilities, a conference room, cafe/concession, general offices, and a media room for viewing film. In addition, a swimming pool is planned along with a fitness center, a jogging trail around the entire park, and five pavilion areas with beach volleyball, a children's playground and mini soccer fields.
There is plenty of lighted parking on a hard packed gravel lot. Look at the size of those grand daddy trees!
Here are some of the 14 full sized, lighted soccer fields.
I didn't see a single weed in any of the fields. I wish my front yard looked like this. I just cannot believe this was farmland a year ago.
When I said the fields were lighted, it was an understatement. Here is a close-up of one of the light poles. I have a lot of respect for the town of Fairview. They do the planning it takes to make their projects successful. They also hold the developer's feet to the fire and make sure they perform their part of the bargain. When they do anything, they do it right, so in a way I'm really not surprised to see how well this facility turned out.
Another picture of the parking lot taken even further back. It extends well over the rise in the background all the way to the little white house. These pictures were taken mid-day on a school day, so there was no-one there except the groundskeeper and me. I wondered out loud how where everyone was, but Curtis assured me they get very busy after school and on weekends.
They left the original barn on the property. I hope they will keep it and maybe even restore it.
They have done a very nice job of landscaping. The perimeter of the park is almost entirely wooded, which frames it beautifully. It looks like they left as many of the mature trees as they could.
Another shot of the landscaping.
I liked this shot with the original barbed wire fencing and old bois d 'arc posts.
This is view as you are leaving the complex and driving back up the road towards CR 317
More shots of the property near the entrance.
These next two shots were taken from on top of a berm which also serves as stadium seating.
This will give you an idea of how rough this land was just last year.
Curtis Kimble has done a great job maintaining the facility.
This attached land is also slated for future development of more soccer fields.
Here is a good picture of the before (in foreground) and after (the green fields through the cedars.
This large tank looks to be about two acres in size. It was dug to retain the rainwater and natural runoff. I would imagine Fairview city water costs for a project like this would be astronomical during the summer, so they will pull water from here to irrigate the fields whenever possible. There will eventually be a fountain in the middle of the lake.
I'm looking forward to taking new Spring pictures and will also be updating this site as construction of the improvements begins.
