Don't let the look of the place fool you! Clarks BBQ is a legend in its own right. The true BBQ connoisseurs are fanatics about it and have tried to keep it secret for over 30 years. It has always been my favorite BBQ restaurant by far. It's a good drive to get there, but well worth the effort.
It is not unusual to see a helicopter or two landing across the street with some well heeled BBQ lovers from Dallas or Ft. Worth. And talk about an eclectic group of diners! You'll see bikers, cattlemen, horsemen, farmers, city slickers, kids ... you name it. They are all there for the same reason ... some of the best "Q" you'll ever taste. As you can see, this is not a place to dress up, and the waiting list is usually very short. By the way, Tioga is the home down of Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, but don't blink or you'll miss the town altogether.
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get to Clark's Outpost from the Lucas/Fairview area, but it's really easy to find. Just west on 380, then hang a right on 377 in Aubrey. Follow that all the way out past Aubrey and through Pilot Point. It is on the right in Tioga just past the bridge over one of the fingers of Lake Ray Roberts.
While you are driving through Pilot Point and Aubrey, you might want to spend some time driving around the small side streets that dead-end into 377 (like St. Johns Road). There isn't much to the towns themselves, but you will some fabulous (and expensive) quarter-horse and cutting horse ranches. This is home to some of the finest horses in the world. They have congregated in this area because of the sandy soil (versus the clay gumbo you will find on this side of town). You might also want to walk around Paul Taylor's (on your left in Pilot Point). You might enjoy walking around and looking at all the saddles and equine gear. You are right in the heart of real horse country and it is all right down the road from us!
