Fossil Rim is an animal conservation center. The neat thing is they allow you to drive your vehicle through the park to see the animals living in their natural environment. It is 1,800 acres of heavily wooded areas and savannah-like pastures that will remind you of Africa. They even have some pretty steep hills! There are some really stunning views, especially for us "flatlanders". The animals roam freely within their own distinct ranges. The tour is 9 1/2 miles long and you can meander along at your own pace. We usually spend about 3 hours at the park. There is a convenient rest stop halfway through the tour with a petting zoo and some pretty good food. It has one of the best views in the park along with a petting zoo and souvenir shop. You can purchase food at the front gate to hand feed many of the animals. The animals they allow next to the cars are all very gentle (no monkeys). They keep the big ones (and dangerous animals) like the white rhinos and Cheetahs away from the cars but you still have good views of them. The giraffes are a lot of fun for kids to feed especially if you have a sun-roof. They are incredibly gentle creatures with soft mouths. It will probably take a couple of hours to get there from this part of the Metroplex. It is one of our favorite places to visit in the summer when we don't have time for a longer break. We have friends who have stayed overnight in the park and said it was an awesome experience. They heard the wolves howl and watched the nocturnal animals come out. We plan on doing that this Fall when it cools down. We posted some of our pictures below. If you would like to learn more about Fossil Rim, here is the link to their site ...
